Choosing a home builder can certainly be a difficult task, but it can be made easier by following these tips. First, be on the lookout for signs in your neighborhood. Generally, contractors are quick to place signs on their construction site (free advertising, right?), and so you can either look at the sheer volume of signs for any particular contractor, or better, ask the home owners about their experience.
Also, consider any organizations that the contractor is a member of. This includes NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), home builders associations, and of course be sure to review their BBB record.
